Voting rights

The gutting of the Voting Rights Act increased disenfranchisement of voters of color and left it up to each state to rewrite the rules of voting. Now, millions of eligible voters live in states with restrictive voting laws. At the same time, election officials are fighting threats to their safety and efforts to subvert the election system with limited resources. By taking proactive measures, local governments can help counteract the impact of these restrictions and make the election process more accessible to all.

Voting plays a key role in building a multi-racial democracy, giving people from all backgrounds a voice in shaping the future.

But, efforts to silence those voices have increased in recent years. In 2024, there were attempts to reduce voting access in Wisconsin, overreach by the Georgia state election board, and the spread of misinformation in many jurisdictions.

Since 2020, local election officials have faced these growing challenges head on, but one in five say they are unlikely to serve in the 2026 midterm elections. To ensure our elections run smoothly, it’s critical to support new and veteran officials to run free and fair elections.

Public Rights Project works with local election officials who are facing challenges like voter suppression efforts, abuses of power, and scrutiny from bad-faith actors.

How we work

Public Rights Project works with local election officials to protect pro-voter election regulations and strengthen voting rights. 

Legal representation: We provide ongoing litigation support and answers to legal questions in real time.

Training and technical assistance: We share solutions to protect local elections officials and constituents from state overreach and bogus litigation.

Convenings: We bring local election officials together to foster collaboration, address civil rights challenges, and develop actionable solutions.

Amicus briefs: We uplift the expertise of local elections officials in court filings.
