PRP filed a lawsuit against the Georgia State Election Board on behalf of the Muscogee County Board of Elections and Registration to block the state’s new hand-counting rule from going into effect. The lawsuit was filed in the Superior Court of Muscogee County. Muscogee has agreed to pay PRP for its services in the case.
The rule requires poll workers to count ballots cast on election day by hand. The lawsuit argues that the rule will create confusion, delay reporting of election results, place significant burden on election officials, and undermine public trust in the system.
Additionally, the lawsuit states that election officials have already set budgets for the 2024 election, trained poll workers, and secured polling locations. Muscogee argues that changing the rules now would be unlawful and urged the court to expedite a decision and block the hand-counting rule for the upcoming general election.
As part of the effort to ensure the hand-counting rule will not be in effect on Election Day, Muscogee is seeking a temporary restraining order from the Superior Court.
