Elisabeth Smith

Elisabeth Smith is an attorney and reproductive and civil rights policy expert with nearly two decades of non-profit leadership.

Elisabeth recently served as the director of state policy and advocacy in the U.S. at the Center for Reproductive Rights where she led a national campaign to enact interstate shield laws (18 states and counting) after the U.S. Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade. Elisabeth was responsible for developing, implementing and managing the Center’s reproductive rights policy initiatives and strategies aimed at moving proactive policy strategies forward and preventing abortion restrictions in the states.

Prior to that role, Elisabeth was the Legislative Director at the ACLU of Washington State where she worked to strengthen the fundamental civil rights and civil liberties of all Washingtonians through successful legislative and policy strategies. As a staff attorney at Northwest Health Law Advocates, Elisabeth accomplished law reform on behalf of consumers across transgender health care, reproductive health and rights, ACA tax issues, access to healthcare, privacy, and affordability concerns. Before attending law school, Elisabeth worked at two international art nonprofits, the Terra Foundation for American Art and the National Association for Latino Arts and Cultures.

Elisabeth is a graduate of the University of Washington School of Law where she served as the Editor-in-Chief of the Washington International Law Journal. She also holds an M.A. from the University of Chicago and a B.A. with honors from Davidson College. She serves as a trustee at Woodlawn Cemetery, a historic cemetery in the Bronx with the largest and finest collection of funerary art in the country.
