Criminal justice reformers are supporting a new wave of progressive district attorneys, who present a new wave of opportunity to reverse decades of prison waste that has wreaked havoc on low-income communities of color.

The Public Rights Project is bringing two recent Yale Law School grads to bolster Oakland’s capacity for civil rights litigation.

“[This new partnership with the Oakland City Attorney’s Office] is a new way to think about how we can increase city and state’s ability to do [affirmative litigation work],” Jill Habig said.

Habig, a lawyer by training and involved in local and state government for most of the past decade, discusses civil rights in schools, as well as chronic absence and the school-to-prison pipeline.
