Public Rights Project was founded in 2017 to help local government officials fight for civil rights. We use legal advocacy, capacity building, convenings, and storytelling to advance civil rights and strengthen democracy. A talented staff consisting of lawyers, advocates, organizers, storytellers, and more carries out this critical work with passion and rigor.

Deputy Chief of Programs

Public Rights Project seeks to hire a Deputy Chief of Programs to serve as a strategic partner to the Chief Program Officer and help oversee legal work across the organization during a period of rapid growth. This role works across PRP’s Civil Rights Hub, Litigation team, and Election Protection Hub to help ensure high-quality, efficient legal and programmatic work that protects civil rights, voting rights, and local democracy nationwide.

The Deputy Chief will lead and strengthen internal program operations, building the systems and processes that allow PRP’s legal teams to scale their impact across multiple issue areas and jurisdictions. This is a primarily internal, process-oriented leadership role that requires a seasoned public-interest lawyer with strong experience in management, operations, and strategic oversight. The position reports to the Chief Program Officer and collaborates closely with department leaders across the organization.

Director, Election Protection Hub

Public Rights Project is seeking an experienced attorney and leader to serve as Director of the Election Protection Hub, responsible for overseeing the program and leading its strategy to support local election officials in protecting voting rights and ensuring safe, fair elections. The Director manages the Election Protection Hub team, coordinates cross-functional staff across the organization, and oversees key activities including providing technical assistance to election officials, filing amicus briefs, conducting outreach to government and nonprofit partners, convening collaborators, contributing insights for media and publications, supporting development efforts, and working with the Director of Litigation to identify and develop high-impact election-related cases in state and federal courts. The Director will collaborate closely with Pubic Rights Project’s Chief Program Officer, Director of Litigation, and Director of the Civil Rights Hub to advance strategic partnerships with state and local governments and civil rights organizations.

Senior Manager, Media Relations

Public Rights Project is seeking a Senior Manager, Media Relations, to lead our earned media strategy for PRP and our growing network of local government partners. In this role, you will elevate the voices of local leaders and communities on the frontlines of justice, translating complex legal and policy work into clear, compelling narratives that shape public discourse and reach national and regional audiences. Reporting to the Director of Communications, this role will supervise the Media Relations Coordinator and collaborate closely with PRP’s Communications & Marketing team.

The Senior Manager will build and manage key relationships with journalists, lead proactive media campaigns, and produce high-impact content — from press releases to op-eds — that positions PRP and our partners as leading voices in civil rights, democracy, and local governance. This role requires strong strategic and execution skills, excellent editorial judgment, and the ability to deliver high-quality work on tight timelines, with visibility into high-impact litigation and direct engagement with senior leaders.

Staff Attorney, Civil Rights Hub

Public Rights Project seeks to hire a Staff Attorney to join its Civil Rights Hub (CRH). The Staff Attorney will support CRH objectives through legal research and writing, coordinating resources for local jurisdictions and leaders, and advising jurisdictional partners on a wide array of civil rights matters. The ideal candidate is a strategic thinker, has strong legal writing skills, can prioritize effectively in a fast-paced environment, and demonstrates excellent judgment about what information needs immediate attention.

Grant Writer

Public Rights Project seeks a Grantwriter to join its Development team and help craft compelling grant proposals and reports that clearly communicate the organization’s work and impact. Working closely with teams across the organization, this role will gather information, manage deadlines, and produce high-quality written deliverables that support PRP’s grants and major gifts portfolios. The ideal candidate is a strong writer and collaborative communicator who is excited by PRP’s mission and committed to social justice, responsible governance, and a strong democracy. This is a primarily internally facing role focused on writing and cross-team collaboration rather than direct donor engagement, and candidates from communications, advocacy, policy, or related backgrounds are encouraged to apply.

Fellowships Coordinator

Public Rights Project seeks to hire a Fellowships Coordinator to join our team! This full-time position will support the smooth operation of all fellowship programs within our Affirmative Leadership Pathway. The Fellowships Coordinator will play a key role in managing logistics, recruitment, program communications, online learning support, and data tracking. This role reports to the Senior Program Manager, Learning & Fellowships, and works closely with the Operations Manager, Civil Rights Hub.
